What Is the Use of Generator Slip Ring Repairs?

This essential component of your generator is vital to its performance. But first, what is a slip ring?

Slip rings are a way to transfer both data and power between a stationary surface and a 360-degree rotating one. They’re also known as rotary electrical interfaces, rotating electrical connectors, collectors, swivels, or electrical rotary joints, but all of them are used in electromagnetic systems that require rotation to transmit signals in a generator for AC systems, motors, alternators, as well as in packaging machinery, cable reels, and wind turbines.

Generator slip rings keep wires from dangling dangerously from movable joints, improve mechanical performance, and simplify system operation. Most slip rings are contained within housings to protect them from dust, moisture and other elements that may cause them to malfunction.

How Does a Slip Ring Work?

Slip rings are made up of two basic parts – a rotating metal ring and a brush, or wiper. These are the sliding electrical contacts necessary to pass signals and power across the rotating interface. The number of rings and brushes vary depending on the purpose of the device in which they’re installed.

Brush contacts come in pairs and are made of sintered metal copper or silver graphite riveted to nylon arms and allowed to pivot at the rivet. These rub against the outside of the rotating metal ring and maintain a continuous electrical connection as one portion of the assembly rotates. The brush arms also pivot on the brush posts. There is usually one brush pair per ring, but there can be as many as four or more depending on amperage requirements.

Slip rings come in two basic shapes – cylindrical, or drum shape, and platter, or pancake shape. Which one your generator has depends on which fits best in your system. They’re usually made of brass but can also be silver or coin plated, and are mounted on (as well as insulated from) a center shaft by a non-conductive material such as nylon or phenolic plastic. Each of the two rings is linked with one end of the winding of the armature. As the ring turns, the electric current is transmitted through the brush to the ring making a connection. This always ensures there’s complete contact between the ring and brushes.

Why is Slip Ring Maintenance Critical?

It’s essential that the slip rings in your generator function properly. Ignoring any warning signs, such as arcing, that indicate the collector ring and its brushes are not in continuous contact, can lead to serious damage. For such issues, working with a trusted generator repair shop is the best way to restore performance and avoid costly downtime.
